The BBC’s Scottish video game show videoGaiden has been on a mission - to convince Sega to develop Shenmue 3. And that’s a mission we at Sega Nerds think is very noble, considering it was our number one pick for a sequel Sega has to make.
Well, that mission may have come to an end, at least for the time being, as the group contacted a Sega rep and was told Shenmue 3 is not under development and is not in Sega’s plans.
The rep goes on to say Yu Suzuki is still working on Shenmue Online and will be for several more years.
“There is every possibility that he would want to do a Shenmue 3, but the general feeling is that it won’t happen in the next 3-5 years, or until Sega reaches its current business goals - That is to become the top 3 publisher,” the rep said. “I’d tell our fans not to give up hope, but not to hold their breath either.”
This is certainly a blow to use Sega Nerds who have been holding out hope for another installment in one of the greatest franchises ever. However, if this mysterious “Sega rep” is to be believed, there is still a chance for Sega to continue Shenmue at some point in the future.
